Jan. 11, 1955: Voters go to the polls at City Hall to cast ballots in a $1.5 million bond issue proposed by the Longview school district. Funds were to be used for construction of two new elementary schools on the nort and south sides of the city, renovation of the Northside Negro School and other projects.
Jan. 11, 1955: The major item in Southwestern Gas and Electric Co.’s nearly $16 million budget for 1955 was installation of a 75,000-kilowatt generating unit at Knox Lee Power Plant at Lake Cherokee. The new generating unit was to be the biggest ever installed in Southwestern’s system.
Jan. 11, 1958: A new stretch reducing mill, the first of three phases in Lone Star Steel’s $8 million expansion plan, was completed and the mill operational. The expansion program was financed entirely with working capital.
Jan. 11, 1994: Dallas Express Airlines said it would begin Longview-to-Dallas passenger service by March 1. Flight schedules weren’t set, but the airline said it would operate four daily roundtrips to Dallas Love Field, providing connections to Southwest Airlines flights to other destinations.
