Feb. 13, 1936: Word was received that Col. Carl Estes, publisher of the Longview News and Journal, was resting well after stomach surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. It was reported the publisher withstood the operation in fine condition.
Feb. 13, 1941: Gregg County’s application for a Works Progress Administration grant for construction of an airport was approved by the state WPA director and headed to Washington. Total cost of the project was $404,000, of which the county would pay $153,000.
Feb. 13, 1957: Construction of a new negro elementary was unanimously approved by the school board. The measure called for spending $300,000 of a recently approved $500,000 bond issue for land and construction. The present Southside Negro elementary would be converted to a junior high school.
Feb. 13, 1997: City officials began taking applications internally for candidates to replace Police Chief Johnny Upton, who retired Dec. 31. He had been the city’s chief since April, 1990. Applications were being accepted until Feb. 21 and interviews were set to begin March 3.
